Match report
TMIV v. Chipperfield Clarendon III
19/06/2010
Played at Rowley Lane
After Roger L’s two fine stand-in performances as the 4s captain normal service resumed this week with Chris’ return and er, well, a loss. Oh dear. The only conciliation on offer is that the team that beat us appear to be highly likely to win promotion and possibly the league. Plus, we played better than England did at “Kev” Ball.
The positives first then. Having lost the toss the opposition decided to have a bat on yet another freezing day on the Rowley Lane tundra. If you inspect the scorecard below you can see that the difference between the sides is about the number of runs scored by their left handed opener. This is probably to do their side a slight disservice as our batting was fairly mindless and not worthy of victory, nevertheless this guy was the outstanding bat on the day. And we dropped him early doors. A pretty hard chance in fairness as a leg side delivery from Siva was clipped at pace off his pads and straight through Viveck’s hands who was placed on the 45 to prevent the frequent number of singles being conceded through that area. After this he didn’t look back to get to his fifty favouring off-side biffs over extra-cove and mid-off. Siva opening the bowling struggled to get his hands warm but managed to pick up their other opener who missed a full straight one onto his pads. Things then went quiet for a while with Viveck bowling at the other end keeping the batsmen honest with a tight line and length. After Viveck ended his economical spell (5-3-10-0) Steve entered the fray off a shortened run up due to an achilles injury. With a strong breeze in theory bringing the ball into the left hander Steve curiously found the outside edge of their left handed number 3 which went in-out-into Waqas’ hands at first slip. Rakesh (6-1-24-1) then replaced Siva at the other end and after an over of looseners found his mojo and was rewarded with a clean bowled of the number 4 who was looking to bed in for the duration. Waqas came on to take the pace off the ball, despite a man deliberately placed between cow and long-on their main man continued to back himself to hit over the top. This appeared to have backfired with one heading straight towards Milo but the strong wind was reeking havoc and caused a misjudgement. Steve eventually had the guy caught for 71 playing the same shot with Neil “Bucket Hands” Dennison doing the required (though why he needed to wear shades whilst doing the necessary on a day like that is a mystery). Waqas came into his own at this point taking two in two with lovely flighted deliveries. The hatrick ball brought in a swarm of fielders however the batsman was less than obliging. After the lively start that the opposition had got off to the second half of their innings was slowed down by some excellent tight fielding by TMs. When they decided the time was right to step up the rate Waqas again prospered with two catches taken at mid off. The final two wickets ran hard and started to find the occasional boundary off Waqas who then finished his excellent spell (12-1-38-4) with Siva to deliver the final rites. By bowling full and straight Siva collected the last two wickets of the innings in the final over and finished with (9-1-43-3). Steve who’d bowled unchanged from the 12th over on one leg ended a magnificent spell with 21-7-46-2.
189 to win on an okay looking pitch. Certainly doable if the batting was measured and the batsman retained their concentration. Unfortunately there was little evidence on either of those in our innings and after not very much time at all we found ourselves 22-4 with Ketan (4) falling to an LBW and Rakesh(13) gloving one that bounced erratically. Although the book will show you that one of their bowlers took five wickets, the real damage was done by the other opening bowler who sussed out the RL pitch and bowled full straight and with some pace. He was rewarded by cleaning up Viveck (4) opening the batting, having Sanjay(6) trapped in front (though for a while he refused to leave his crease) followed by Milo first ball. He should have had the skipper with his first three balls as well as he cluelessly wafted around each of them (Chris’ luck held out only until the grubber was received from the other end). This fine bowling allowed the other guy to bowl with impunity at the other end despite regular boundaries being scored off him. Resistance such as it was only materialised in the form of our dynamo keeper A-B (Abilesh) who dealt in boundaries mostly for his well made 33. A bit of excitement got the better of him as he tried to whip a second four in the over off his pads but missing and being trapped plumb in front. Neil helped keep things respectable making 17 playing some lovely straight drives and looks to be going in the right direction with his batting. After he and Waqas were bowled Steve and Siva were left fight for the not out position. There was only ever likely to be one winner in that particular contest especially with Siva having to face a whole six deliveries from a guy tossing it up in tantalising fashion. Affronted by the number of close fielders brought in for him Siva smoked the first ball for four over cow but fell next ball skying one.
So to conclude, great effort in the field by all, poor effort with the bat bar a few. Hopefully next week will see us back on track.
A final big shout out to Hutch who on the promise of “all the beer he could drink” umpired for us in the arctic conditions. Now about that bar-tab Mr. Chairman....
