Match report TMIV v. Botnay Bay II

Rowley Lane

On what most of us accepted to be one of the coldest days that we have ever had the misfortune to pull on crickets whites (and in most cases many layers of cricket whites) about the only thing that kept us going was the see-sawing of the result from one team to another.

On winning the toss the 4s duly inserted themselves on the justification that one of our players was dropping his son off at a children's party and another did not have any trousers with him, professional to the end as always in the 4s. Plus there was the issue of the incessant drizzle that made the ball look particularly unappealing to bowl with.

Disaster (these things being relative) struck in the first over when Kamlesh fell LBW, after this Laurie (playing his first game in 18 months) and Ketan steadied the ship and proceeded along reasonably well until Ketan fell to a big top edge on 13. The pitch was proving to be somewhat erratic bouncewise though given the number of LBW/bowled there were on both sides apparently no one head the warnings. Laurie also fell to a hotly disputed LBW for 20 (I gave it, it was plumb). This brought Sanjay to the crease however his mind was on other things as he had some childcare issues in that he needed to collect his son from the aforementioned children’s party just about the time he went out to bat. In an effort to win father of the year Sanjay packed off one of the umpires to do his bidding so he could concentrate on the more important issue at hand, run scoring. This proved to be a good plan as he duly top-scored with 43 before being bowled. Kit had also come and gone in this time and was unfortunate, after upping the run rate with some boundary hitting, to have one shoot under his bat as he went back to a short one. Debutante Mani (alas not the Stone Roses bassist) came and went, well caught at slip followed by Neil, Siva, Chris and Steve who all came in biffed a four or two and then got out; Steve to the second hotly disputed LBW of the day although a big stride means nothing in these days of Hawkeye. We had made 135 on a dubious pitch which was less than we would’ve liked (fairly obvious I suppose) but given the erratic bounce a potentially match winning total.

Sadly it proved not to the be the case but we were close and generally speaking were more than handy in the field on a day that frankly did not warrant that kind of enthusiasm.

The Chairman opened the bowling with Siva at the other end. The first few overs were sedate enough except for Siva testing out the middle of the pitch to see just how slow it was, the resulting boundary was enough to talk him out of any such further experimentation. The openers were not doing too much until the younger of the pair suddenly sprung to life to lace back at Steve an ankle breaker that had him hot footing over the ball in self-preservation. Siva then started to produce some moments of magic including two exceptional yorkers that were all about pace and accuracy and prompted their umpire to comment on quality exceeding all he had seen in this two week old season. In-dispersed with this he also got an LBW against the other opener who should’ve known better than to rock onto the back foot. He then picked up the opposition skipper whose high top edge was well held by Sanjay coming round from square leg. Sreekesh who was looking for some liquid nitrogen to warm his hands up in came on with Siva tiring but he was really suffering with letting go of the ball and had to take a blow. It was almost like the lad was born in India or something given his evident aversion to the English ‘summer’. Steve clearly feeling left out started to, “join the party” as Tony Greig (who incidentally appeared to be umpiring for the other side at this point) would say. He cleaned up their no.6 and then found the edge of no.5 although this unfortunately went in and out of first slip’s hand. It was not a day for catching with most fielders hands resembling icicles. After being given this life their batsman went onto make 42 before Steve had him LBW. After a brief respite Siva was back on to pick up his fifth, another LBW. The no.9 came in and almost immediately offered a chance to mid-on who, on any other day without a minus windchill factor would have gobbled it up, dropped it. The partnership that followed took the game away from us and although Steve decided to make things interesting by having him caught behind with 10 needed there were too few runs to take the remaining two wickets. Siva finished with 14-3-56-5 and Steve, a marathon, miserly 24-10-36-3.
