Match report TMCC IV v Bayford & Hertford II, 1 May 2010

B & H Smoked!

TMCC IV 255-7 dec (50 overs) Bayford & Hertford II 93 all out (34.5 overs) TMCC IV Won by 162 runs, 30 points.

So the pitch is green, the sky is grey, the skipper’s a bowler – obviously on winning the toss, you stick ‘em in, right? Wrong. The pitch was, despite the natural green tinge, an excellent one, and with rain likely later Steve reckoned it better to post a total than bat through interruptions, when the pitch might have cut up a bit as well.

Big swing for Nicholas confused Vivek for a while until he worked it out and began to play his trademark booming straight drives. After 4 and 6 came W sadly as another boomer somehow stuck in the other bowler’s grasp, but his 35 came off 30 balls and at 52-1 off 10 we were off to a flyer. Kamlesh carried on calmly, and Jeremy played stylishly as ever, and both will be disappointed not to have ‘gone on’ after reaching 37 and 28 respectively. The skipper’s ‘NFA’ team talk obviously struck home as everyone got their heads down, and contributed – Rakesh 17, Sanjay 41, Prakash 19 – but the icing on the NFA cake was the partnership of 75 in 7 overs between Sreekesh and Siva, who will surely forgive Steve for declaring on him when he was 44 not out (2 x 6, 24 balls). B&H were uninspired in the field, quiet and almost apologetic, and looked a beaten team when they trudged in for tea (which cost us £45).

Aiming to confuse as ever we played the old ball trick and entrusted it to ‘Murali’ Sreekesh and ‘Moustachios’ Vivek, and while only one wicket fell to that pair (a top catch by Neil ‘Bucket Hands’ Dennison at gully), the batsmen’s conservative approach and our boys’ greater pace and aggression meant the writing was on the wall. Taking the new nut brought immediate gains as Siva speared a fast inswinging yorker through no.3’s defences , and had no.4 caught by Sanjay in Neil’s spot at gully. Skipper Steve got in on the act by removing the competent –looking big opener for 21, and then castling no.6 for a third ball duck. At 39 for 5 B&H looked all fagged out, although a mini-revival took them up to 56 for 6 (Vivek struck, a caught behind by Kam) and then 93 for 7 - aggressive fields and bold hitting by no. 5 making the team think for a while. But(t) it wasn’t long before Sreekesh cleaned up the hitter, and Sanjay’s cry of ‘2,2,2’ finally made some sense as he took 2 in 2, both bowled, and the 10 B&H were well and truly smoked.
