Hertford III v Totteridge Millhillians Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 22 May 2010 at 1:00pm
Totteridge Millhillians Cricket Club Lost by 26 runs
Match report
A lethargic start on a hot sunny day resulted in Hertford steaming to around 170 for 1 at the second round of drinks with 17 overs to go. It takes no mathematician to realise we could have been chasing a very big total indeed. Hats off to Charlie and Tony for labouring on through a tough opening spell.
As it turned out, we did well to keep them down to 246 - and it could have been 20 or 30 runs less if we'd held onto our catches. Jeremy Graves did the much needed damage to the top order, and Charlie and Sreekesh bowled well to the death on a track that offered little to the bowlers.
Having chased down 241 last week - the team were confident of their chances, and a pretty calm first 10 overs at 4 an over was the order of the day. Indeed, that's exactly what happened, but was followed by 4 relatively quick wickets leaving us (or more specifically Hilton) with a lot to do.
Hilton was patient; waited for the bad ball; and whilst working his way through the 30s, 40s, 50's and beyond; built partnerships with Mani then Sreekesh then Jeremy Graves.
The required run-rate dipped below 7 an-over - and with strong hopes of reaching 200 and getting the extra batting point(!) it was still felt well worth it to chase the win.
A nice cameo from Charlie; but sadly he too fell; and then Mike Pratt being bowled round his legs left us 9 down; 5 overs remaining; 30 odd to win.
Tony blocked out and ran superbly, and though Hilts gave it his all to the bitter end, holed out in the deep for a marvellous 108. Gamve over, 220 all out. A lesson in run avoidance.
