Chorleywood II v Totteridge Millhillians Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 08 May 2010 at 1:00pm
Totteridge Millhillians Cricket Club Won by 4 wickets

Match report Arun Runs Amok

With 3s skipper Hutch filling in behind the sticks this week, it was left to Charlie Low to take the reins to let Jim concentrate on the immediate task at hand.

His first big call, having won the toss and made the brave decision to chase, despite the possibility of a repeat of last week's galling rain-induced 3 pointer, was to pair Timeless Tony Alderton with the pace-off-the-ball guile of Arun Madhasaravanan to get things going.

The unorthodox approach paid almost immediate dividends, with the Chorleywood opener playing back to a fullish straight one and losing his stumps. From this point on, Charlie's clear mandate for Run Avoidance At All Costs was put into full effect, Tony's parsimonious line and length leaving the batsmen no alternative but to play out dot after dot.

Little over 30 runs were on the board after 20 overs, and as the pressure built the inevitable happened, with chances coming and wickets starting to fall. Arun continued to vary his pace beautifully, and was well supported in the field with several players chiming in with some solid catches.

Tony was disappointed not to take a wicket, but had performed to his brief perfectly, with an economy of only 1.5. Charlie brought himself into the attack just in time to benefit from the growing pressure and took up the mantle well.

Just when there looked to be a chance of skittling them for under 100, two lower order batters took a more aggressive approach with a succession of clean, if a little agricultural, hits over mid on and midwicket.

But Arun kept plugging away and wrapped up the innings in the 49th over, having bowled unchanged and walked away with an astonishing 8 wickets. Who had him in their fantasy team?!

The chase started very promisingly, with Jeremy and Rakesh stroking the ball around well, including some beautifully hit boundaries. Both fell to decent balls, bringing in-form Hilton to the crease. He settled in, allowing PK to unleash a more aggressive repertoire of shots to keep the score moving. When he departed, trying one big shot too many, Alex and Hilton decided that prudence was the requirement, and played watchfully against the slow, accurate bowling of the two Chorleywood 'gentlemen of enhanced experience'.

The runs dried up, but with little to no scoreboard pressure, it was an acceptable compromise. After they had soaked up the slower bowling for about 15 overs, Alex succumbed trying to push the rate a little, but fortunately Hilton took that as the cue to open up. He and Pablo then took the attack back to the bowlers, and although there were a few jittery moments (on the boundary, not at the crease), they all but won the match, sadly both missing out on the red ink with first Pablo and then Hilton (57) falling with just 2 runs required.

Hutch saw the game home, with Shiyam fittingly 0* at the other end in possibly his last game for the club before he heads to Sri Lanka to start his new life with his wife and family. All the best Shi-ra!

Top performances from Arun and Hilton, but it was genuinely a true team performance which, we hope, has set the tone for the rest of the season.
