Match report
Tms 3s lose out to the rain.
With rain forecast for later in the day there was no doubt in anyone’s mind that batting first was the best option for point accumulation. Unfortunately, Cap’n Jim Hutch won the toss and feeling the hand of history (or possibly Charlie Low) on his shoulder had no option but to stick ‘em in.
After losing a few wickets early on, Reed rebuilt with numeros 3 and 4 finding batting quite easy, even against the full force of the 100 club. It was the introduction of spin with new boys Sanjay and Arun that slowed things down. Sanjay dealt with the two big boys, one with a delightful spinner that squared him up and rapped him in front whilst the other was cleaned up with a ball, pitched just back of a length, slightly wide of off cunningly designed to bring Gregg Cruder into play on the boundary. With Gregg replacing divots in the outfield and swearing at no-one in particular, Sanjay was looking slightly embarrassed but as we well know, they all count.
Thereafter, runs came at the premium for Reed and with them well placed at 150-5 from 33, they finished off at 209-8. Disciplined spin bowling from Arun, Sanjay and then Arjun who picked up 2 in 2 balls and some energetic fielding meant that Reed could only take 60 runs from their last 20 overs.
A total not ungettable for a TMs III team packed with batsmen. Reed’s opening bowler (Tidey by name, not by nature) ploughed in with 5 no-balls in his first over to get us off to a good start. After Nick Hughes departed, A Book and Hilts took up the task, the latter looking in delightfully good nick (and a snip at £2.5 mill). Hilts fell for 47, Book for 15 which brought Sanjay and Gregg ‘Captain Sensible’ Cruder to the crease. The rain, which up until now had been of the annoying drizzle variety, turned into full on downpour leading to the unavoidable abandonment with TMs looking good at 110-3
Much deliberating over the rules later, we realised that had the game been called off 1 ball earlier, we’d have been 7 points better off. Que Sera.
