Totteridge Millhillians Cricket Club 2nd XI v North Mymms II on Sat 28 Aug 2010 at 1:00pm

Match report A dull game among wet and windy spaces…

A subdued and already relegated North Mymms IIs visited a saturated Rowley Lane for a damp squib of a game that saw Totteridge Millhillians IIs achieve a convincing winning draw in unconvincing fashion – with a heigh-ho, the wind and the rain.

TMs won the toss and batted. The pitch was wet and it was probably not safe to start play at the alloted time but we pressed ahead. Shakeel Durrani clearly enjoyed the conditions, playing with a mixture of shrewd watchfulness and tempered aggression to make a fine 52. He was ably supported by Crutchlow (18), Ahmed (22) and Aleem Hussain (25). However, during one of our 'signature passages of play', a flurry of cheap wickets converted a very solid start into a position that inspired a mild panic in the skipper. This is how we do it in a TMs style. Aye.

But cometh the hour, cometh the captain, and my player of the season by a country mile, Big Riz.

The Rizla, once again employing his distinctive crab-like crouch to good effect, pounded a fine 34 not out – with a little help from his friend, The Nozzle (16) – to ensure we posted a respectable 213-8.

So to our final Rowley Lane tea of the season. A big thanks must go to our lovely tea lady, who once again supplied the goods wearing a cheeky smile and an impeccably starched tabard – a highly erotic proposition for many of the umpires who visit us. And with eight of the boys fasting, it was no surprise when Phil Ridout appeared as if by magic to tuck in to the spoils.

So North Mymms IIs began their reply. And we began dropping catches. Well, why change a season-long habit.

Their opening bat, a barrel-chested deadringer for Samwise Gamgee was dropped three or four times on his way to their only decent score before being nonchalantly pouched by Crutchlow. Although, to be fair, their other young opening bowler came in and played some lovely shots.

The Nozzle (9-2-17-3), The Rizla (16-2-53-3) and Hulk Foot Ridout (5-0-11-2) bowled well once again but, with chances asking for spare change at Old Street Station, and the wet outfield making bowling full-tilt impossible, getting all 10 wickets was going to be a big ask.

Had we taken our chances, of course we would have Triumphed easily. As it was, we C5’d slowly, inexorably, towards another bore draw – and a rather wet one at that. Plop.
